Mattress odor can disrupt sleep. I am sure you would not like to spend your night getting whiff of your mattress’ pungent and disorienting odor. That being said, you should know how to get rid of mattress odor. There are actually a lot of cleaning solutions that work in removing mattress odor. But you can also find some ideal cleaning treatments in your own home. Getting Rid Of Initial Mattress Smell I am talking about the smell of the mattress after opening the package. Most mattresses emit a strong factory-like or chemical scent that tends to trigger sinus problems and even asthma. It is actually more ideal to air the mattress out first before using it. Memory foam, latex foam and air mattresses tend to emit a strong odor. What you should do is place the mattress in a nice and airy place. Make sure that the room is dry and it is not very humid so you can prevent the appearance of molds. Place the mattress on a clean platform. If your neighborhood is relatively clean or it is far from the hustle and bustle of the city, you can try opening the window to allow air to circulate inside and dissipate the unwanted odor of the mattress. Turn the mattress on the other side after a day and leave it there to air out. You might have to air the bed out for 2-5 days so you can completely get rid of the odor. If your neighbourhood is too polluted and fresh air cannot circulate inside, try an electric fan to air your bed out. Place the bed on a platform and direct the fan to the bed. Getting Rid Of Pet Odor If you have pets at home and your pets also sleep on your mattress, your mattress can smell bad. Fur and pet dander can also accumulate on your sheets. Here is what you should do:
Step 2: While waiting for your bed sheets to dry up, place your pillows in a nice an airy area to get rid of germs, bacteria and unwanted odor. Also place your mattress in the same place. Put it on a clean platform so you can easily clean it. Step 3: Use a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter to vacuum the mattress. This type of vacuum cleaner can help get rid of minute dirt and dust particles. It also effectively reduces pet dander in mattresses and bed sheets. Step 4: Try spraying citrus spray all over the bed. Mix half a cup of lemon juice and half a cup of warm water. Pour the solution in a spray bottle and spray it all over the mattress. This should work in dissipating unwanted mattress odor. It will also help make your mattress smell fresh and citrusy. Step 5: Leave your mattress there overnight to dry up completely. The next day, install your bed back to your room and place your fresh bed sheets. Getting Rid Of Pee Smell Here are the things you should do to get rid of pee odor: Step 1: If the mattress is still wet, use an absorbent towel to remove most of the moisture from the bed. Press the absorbent towel on the affected area of the mattress. Step 2: Prepare a cleaning solution. Mix one part baking soda, one part distilled white vinegar and two parts water. Pour this cleaning solution in a spray bottle. Spray it on the affected areas of the bed. Baking soda helps diffuse unwanted odor while vinegar helps get rid of the pee odor and helps disinfect the mattress. Step 3: Allow the mattress to dry up completely. Step 4: After drying up, use a damp cloth to wipe the surface of the bed. Get rid of lingering cleaning residues. Step 5: Sprinkle loose baking soda all over the mattress. Leave it there for an hour. After an hour, vacuum it off. Let the mattress dry before using it again. Getting Rid Of Sweat Smell If your mattress absorbs moisture from your body, it will surely stink after a few months. Use the following steps to get rid of the odor: Step 1: Mix lemon juice with water. Pour it in a spray bottle. Spray it all over the mattress. Leave it there for half a day. Step 2: Sprinkle baking soda all over the bed. Step 3: Leave it there overnight.
Step 5: Try using a bed cover with moisture-repellent properties. Moisture can build up inside the bed and this might cause the accumulation of molds and bed bugs. Install the bed cover on your mattress.
