Styling Your First Baby Room (Part 1)

Every growing family needs a home that has to undergo good styling and design. One family’s home designing dilemma is the creation of their first baby room. Here are some golden rules in transforming a small space into a functional yet stylish nursery room:

Dilemma 1: Creating a room for your new baby out of a very small space. The first thing you need to do is to determine your baby’s needs. The most necessary things that your baby needs have to be carefully identified. These important things will consume most of the space. Also, consider some pointers before buying furniture and other things you want to put in the room. Choose strong pieces of furniture that are durable and classic in style. Every piece you put in must serve a useful purpose. In addition, whatever you want will not always what baby wants and needs. It will always be your baby’s interests that will continue to change and not yours.

Dilemma 2: Best color combination for a small baby room. There are actually no rules that would dictate you what colors you should use for a nursery, or any room. Any tone or shade will work as long as it will compliment the atmosphere that you want to achieve. If you want a warmer and cozier feel, then darker tones will do; if you want an active and lively mood for the room, bright tones will fit. Whatever environment you put your baby in renders a response from the little one. For instance, if you choose blue as the shade of the room for studying purposes, then it would encourage concentration. But, it will depend on what kind of blue. An electric blue shade would be too strident for the senses, thus it may not be a good shade for studying purposes. Consider how you have known your baby. If your baby has a tendency towards hyperactivity, then a calming and cheering overall color would be best. If your child can handle a lot of color patterns and bold decorations, then bold color would be good. Again, there are no definite rules for this dilemma. What you have to do is consider your child’s personality, of course through observation and constant communication, and then with that, you will know what could be the best color combination for your nursery room.

Dilemma 3: Important things you must put in your baby’s room. There are only a few important items that must be present in your baby’s room.

a. Bed or other type of sleeping furniture – according to research, babies never want to sleep all evening in a crib, but rather in a bed. So, consider not placing a crib in the nursery. However, this fixture depends on the parents and the user’s preference. If you choose a crib, make sure that it is sturdy and can be used again by another baby. If you choose a bed, then it must be low and safe for an infant. You may also want to have your baby sleep with you, or if not, your baby can sleep in a queen-sized bed surrounded with pillows plus a padded headboard to prevent your baby from bumping.

b. A handy storage unit for baby’s necessities – a table that can serve as his changing table and supply cabinet for diapers, toiletries, and medicines. Just like beds or cribs, consider the reusability of the furniture. This table can be a console table with a changing pad, a stack of drawers for diapers and the like, and a wooden tray that held all the necessities. Everything you need should be within reach.

c. Storage for toys and books – choose a well-built furniture piece that the child can use for a long time and that can go for any kind of room motif.

As for accessories, remember to keep them out of reach of children. You will not need too much space for accessories. Just make sure that your necessities look great enough so to serve as decors too. The concept of minimization or minimalism could be observed.

Dilemma 4: Lighting techniques in preparing a baby room. Flexibility should also be considered. You may want to radiate different types of moods when using the space. For a baby’s room, you will need white and bright general lighting. This is the light you switch on automatically when you use the room. Also, this light can help you see every spot of dirt or dangerous items that may be lying around the floor. You would also be able to identify any baby’s unusual coloration. You can also have a small droplight near the bed that is on a dimmer switch so for the baby to automatically distinguish daytime to rest time.

These are only few of many questions that could bother you for the first time of designing your baby’s room. Again, flexibility, reusability, and appropriateness of the designs and style of the room should be considered. It will not always be your needs but the baby’s wants, interests and needs that should be first thought about.
