Whether you are a boy or a girl, it is important that you have some knowledge of DIY skills in your home in order to make it possible for you to make the necessary repairs or improvements without having to resort to pay exoirbitant fees for professional help. If you are looking at items in your monthly bill that can be removed or reduced, this is one of those. It does not matter what gender you have because, at the end of the day, you will still have to do these tasks especially if you are only on your own.

A list on the essential DIY skills can go on and on, so this one is just a reflection of my opinion. Feel free to share us some of your recommended DIY skills in the corresponding comments box.

One of the essential DIY skills that one has to know is painting. This is not the artistic kind of painting, but rather the home painting variety. Painting costs can stack up to a few hundred dollars, whereas you can do it on your own, and with the help of some friends or so, for only the price of the paint. You will normally need to paint your home once every 5 years so you won't exactly have to do it every now and then.

Turning off the water at the mains is another "skill" that you have to master. It's not really a skill because you are just going to turn off a valve usually located underneath your kitchen sink or in your garage. The problem is that many people overlook these valves and actually don't know what to do when water is leaking out in some part of the house.

Similarly, turning off the main electric switch is essential when there are power issues in certain parts of your home. When such issues arise, the best advice would be turn off this main electric switch and have an electrician look at the main problem. Always wear rubber gloves when turning this off!

Lastly, and this is just the same as the previous two, learn how to turn off your main gas line if you smell that your house is already smelling like gasoline. Never ignite a fire when you smell gas because you might just see your house instantly burn into flames with you.
